Methacrylate, the distinctive material of contemporary design by Toolux

Toolux means ‘too much light’, a reference to the protagonist of the brand’s creations, methacrylate (PMMA) proposed in bright or fluorescent colours. A more than ever contemporary idea that puts creativity at the centre of every project. But why was this plastic material chosen as the core of the brand?

Methacrylate: transparent, resistant, durable

Methacrylate is an extremely versatile and popular material in the design world due to its unique characteristics. Thanks to its transparency, it is ideal for creating effects of visual lightness, while being much more resistant and unbreakable than traditional glass.

In addition, it is highly mouldable, making it possible to experiment with complex and innovative shapes without compromising its strength.

It can also be easily customised through techniques such as colouring or printing, making it an ideal material for custom design projects.

The methacrylate chosen by Toolux is recyclable and entirely Made in Italy. Not just ordinary plastic polymer, but a unique material that espouses the principles of durability and non-replacement.

A bit of history of this plastic material

First developed in the 1930s as a lighter and more resistant alternative to glass, methacrylate found application in the military sector for aircraft windows and domes due to its strength and transparency. After the war, it also began to be used in design, where it was appreciated for its versatility, lightness and ease of processing. From the 1960s onwards, methacrylate became a symbol of modern and futuristic design, used in iconic furniture, lamps and furnishings.

Methacrylate in the objects of Toolux Design

In the furnishing accessories designed by Toolux Design, methacrylate is certainly the absolute protagonist, alongside more traditional high-value materials such as Roman travertine, Carrara marble, Calacatta marble, Verde Alpi marble, and tempered glass.

Toolux Design’s collection features coffee tables, tables, bookcases, accessories and mirrors with pop prints, playing on the boundary between art and design, with contemporary and creative lines. Each piece is designed and handmade in Italy, and becomes the protagonist of the interior like a work of art.
